Security Software protects you from Viruses, Adware and Spyware which take over your computer when you least expect it - the software works by analysing files on the computer - for example, when you open an E-Mail attachment, the software scans it so make sure it is safe and won't infect your computer. It is essential that you have this software on your computer and it is up-to-date in order to protect you.
What does Galore recommend?
At Galore Computers we recommend clients use Microsoft Security Essentials to protect their computers - users of Windows Vista and Windows 7 can download this free of charge from:
Windows 8 users can rest assured that Security Essentials (Or Windows Defender as it is known in the OS) is installed and built into the operating system and you do not need to download any additional software.
What about Windows XP?
Galore Computers strongly recommends any clients still using Microsoft Windows XP upgrade to a new version of Windows such as Windows 7 or Windows 8. Microsoft ended support for XP on 8th April 2014 - basically this means any "holes" in the Operating System will not be filled in from this date which leaves your computer in a very vulnerable position.
We understand that this leaves clients in a difficult position as they are often used to the XP Layout and don't see why they should upgrade as there is a cost involved, but unfortunately every product has a "life cycle" and XP has reached the end of it.
We can upgrade your computer from Windows XP to a version of your choosing (we recommend 7 or 8) - please get in touch to discuss this with us.
Remember, Galore Computers unlike our competitors will transfer your personal files such as documents, photos and music across to your new version of Windows for no extra cost and we will do all that we can to make the transition as smooth as possible. We are also always on hand to offer any support and guidance if needed to help you get settled into the new version.
Installing Security Software such as Microsoft Security Essentials is only the first step in protecting your computer. It is imperative that you keep the software up-to-date so it recognises the latest security threats out there. Security software has a database of known viruses called "definitions" which need to be updated regularly. Security Essentials will generally keep itself up-to-date on a daily basis, but should it fail to do so, the icon will turn from green to orange or red to alert you. If this happens and you can't receive updates, please contact Galore as soon as possible as your computer may be at risk.
The Operating System (Windows) and the programs on it such as Microsoft Office, or Abobe Reader need to be kept up-to-date too, as the developers will often release fixes to common problems or patches to fix security holes in their software. For Windows, this is often automated through Microsoft Windows Update - if your computer prompts you that it needs to install Updates (often when you restart or shutdown) then we recommend you let it. Other programs may notify you when they require updates and again, you should keep them up-to-date.
This article is designed as a guide to assist our clients in ensuring their computers are protected from security threats. It is not a definitive way of protecting your computer system, and there is always a chance that a virus could get through holes in software, for example, a new area that security software hasn't been taught to look for.
We recommend clients take advantage of regular health checks that Galore offers where we will fully update the software on the computer and run deep scans to ensure everything is runnng as it should be. Galore Computers recommends Microsoft Security Essentials on the basis of our professional experience - we are not affiliated to Microsoft or any other software vendor.
If you have any doubts about the security of your computer system, we strongly recommend you contact Galore Computers for advice - do not leave it till it's too late!
